Gard Victor "Vic" Burchfield

Vic Burchfield started at the Columbus Water Works in 1986 as a chemist where he managed the Industrial Pretreatment Lab. Vic was promoted to Lab Director where he managed the CWW consolidated laboratory and implemented the lab’s first Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). In 1993, he advanced to the role of Manager of Water Quality Monitoring during which time he led the effort to combine the Industrial Pretreatment Program and the Backflow Prevention Program under one manager and expanded the lab’s analytical capacity to include Gas Chromatography, Ion Chromatography, Total Organic Carbon, particle counting, and mercury analysis. In 1997 he was promoted to Assistant Vice President of Information and Water Quality Services where he served as Manager of the newly formed Information Technology Department and continued general management over the Environmental Compliance Department and the Water Quality Monitoring Department. After the events of 9/11 the additional role of CWW Security Officer was added to his duties to oversee the development of the CWW Security Program. In 2009, Vic was promoted to Vice President of Environmental and Information Services where he currently serves as CIO and Manager of the Information Technology Department. He continues to provide general oversight management over the Water Quality Monitoring Department and the Environmental Compliance Department. Vic graduated from Mercer University with a Bachelor of Arts double major in Chemistry and Christianity. He attended the Georgia Water & Wastewater Institute and is a certified as a Wastewater Operator Class III, Wastewater Lab Analyst, and Water Lab Analyst. He attended Georgia Tech’s Computer Certificate Program where he earned a Certificate in Database Management and a Certificate in Open Systems. Vic also attended the University of North Carolina, Kenan-Flagler Business School and earned a Certificate in Water & Wastewater Leadership. Vic is trained at the ICS400 level under the National Incident Management System (NIMS). Vic has been recognized by his peers in the industry with several statewide awards including the Georgia Association of Water Professional’s Ira C. Kelly Award for Outstanding Service in Laboratory Operations and the Water Environment Federation’s Laboratory Analyst Excellence Award. Vic has served as President of the Muscogee Rotary Club, Chairman of the GAWP Lab Committee and Information Technology Committee, and Business Chair for the Muscogee/Columbus Pandemic Influenza Preparedness and Response Plan Committee. His other leadership roles in industry and the community organizations include serving on the Board of Directors of the Chattahoochee Riverkeeper, Big Brothers Big Sisters Advisory Board, United Way Allocations Committee, United Way Loaned Executive Team, Mayor’s Homeland Security Task Force, Columbus Critical Infrastructure Committee, and the Columbus Technical College Development Advisory Committee.
