Columbus Water Works, Keep Columbus Beautiful and the Muscogee County Sheriff’s Department would like to say THANK YOU to all those who came out and supported the Grease and Pharmaceutical Recycling Event on Saturday, January 14, 2017.  The response from the public was outstanding! The 305 people who came out to see us on Saturday dropped off 350 gallons of cooking grease and 593 pounds of old medications!!  Those who participated demonstrated the willingness and personal effort to do their part in helping us protect the environment.

We would also like to give a special thank you to K-Mart on Airport Thruway and K-Mart on Macon Road for allowing us to utilize your property for the recycling event.

We all can be environmental stewards by supporting programs such as these to keep pollutants out of the sanitary sewer system and, in turn, out of our natural environment.

mlkDr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is one of the world’s most prominent civil rights leaders. He is responsible for championing the cause of equality and justice for African Americans during the 1960’s Civil Rights Movement. His approach of nonviolence and civil disobedience, including boycotts, sit-ins, and marches, were effective in driving change in U.S. legislation, which would improve the quality of life for African Americans.

Beyond the advancement of African Americans, Dr. King had a vision of a truly united nation regardless of race or skin color. In his infamous “I Have A Dream” speech, delivered on August 28, 1963 during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, he stated this vision by proclaiming that one day “little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.” He believed that love and unity was a stronger force than hatred and division.

In remembrance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his legacy, let’s love one another regardless of our differences. Let’s unite as Americans in declaration of equality and justice for all.

Columbus Water Works wishes you well as you celebrate this important day. In honor of Dr. King, our offices will be closed on Monday, January 16, 2017. Emergency Crews will be available, if you have a leak or other water related emergencies, please call 706-649-3400.

Columbus Water Works and the Columbus Consolidated Government have established a detour (see map below) around the collapsed section of the Riverwalk located approximately 150 yards north of Bulldog Bait and Tackle behind the National Civil War Naval Museum and in proximity to Rotary Park.  We ask that pedestrians and bikers continue to avoid the restricted area until the Riverwalk is repaired, as the safety of our citizens is still our primary consideration.  Our goal is to restore the Riverwalk for public use as quickly and as safely as possible.

Due to heavy rains over the past two days, a section of the Chattahoochee River bank on the Riverwalk has collapsed.  This area of failure is located approximately 150 yards north of Bulldog Bait and Tackle (behind the Confederate Naval Museum and in proximity to Rotary Park).

With the safety of our citizens as our primary consideration, this area of the Riverwalk has been closed and pedestrians and bikers are asked to avoid this area until further notice.  Columbus Water Works has initiated coordination efforts with the Columbus Consolidated Government to establish a temporary by-pass detour until the repair to this area is completed.  Our goal is to restore the Riverwalk for public use as quickly and as safely as possible.
