Continued Hot Weather and Low Rainfall puts Muscogee County in a Drought Advisory

Richard Dunn, Director of the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) of the Department of Natural Resources has placed Muscogee County in Drought Advisory Level One, due to continued dry weather conditions and above-average temperatures.

The Drought Advisory is the first of three drought levels outlined in GA EPD Rule 391-3-30 and recommends voluntary water conservation by water users. Columbus Water Works (CWW) has a comprehensive Drought Management Plan, which establishes a progressive program for preserving the water supply as required by the EPD.  CWW will continue to monitor and provide updates if the drought status changes.

“The lack of widespread precipitation and high temperatures across Muscogee County during the past few months have resulted in increased drought conditions,” said Steve Davis, President of Columbus Water Works. “We are asking the community to use water wisely during this time.  Responsible water use can help maintain our water supply levels.”

Drought Advisory Level 1 outdoor water use allows daily watering for purposes of planting, growing, managing, or maintaining ground cover, trees, shrubs, or other plants only between the hours of 4 p.m. and 10 a.m. by anyone whose water is supplied by a water system permitted by the EPD.

“We want to be proactive in making the community aware of increased drought conditions and ask customers to be mindful of water use,” explained Steve Davis. “Under Level One, customers may continue outdoor water use between 4 P.M. and 10 A.M.”

Columbus Water Works will continue monitoring the drought conditions and work collectively with the State to protect the water supply and other uses of the Chattahoochee River.
