Disposing of Your Fats, Oils and Grease This Thanksgiving

With the holidays rapidly approaching, families across the country are preparing their homes and menus for holiday visits. This time of year can be hectic, and it’s easy to forget, with all of the holiday activity taking place, to take care of your pipes. Between the time spent cooking and cleaning, disposing of leftover fats, oils and grease may be the last thing on your mind.

Many people don’t realize the effects of pouring fats, oils, and grease down the drain until a problem arises later on. When fats and grease are poured down a drain, they eventually cool and solidify inside the pipe.  The solid mass of fat catches debris and other items. Soon, the pipe will be entirely or partially blocked, leading to costly repairs.

Even if your pipes are not directly impacted by pouring fats, oils, and grease down the drain, those belonging to neighbors may be affected. Clogged ducts in your sewer system can eventually lead to clogs in the main sewer line and cause blockages and equipment failure.

At Columbus Water Works, we host grease recycling events throughout the year for you to properly dispose of your fats, oils, and grease. If you are not able to attend a grease recycling event, we also have ten stationary drop-off sites located throughout Columbus. For your convenience, these sites are available 24-hours a day, seven days a week. More information about grease recycling is available here.

Let’s work together this Thanksgiving to keep the fats, oils, and grease out of your drains!
