Because the Chattahoochee River is a major drinking water source, not just for Columbus but also for cities in Alabama, protecting it is of critical interest to Columbus Water Works. It's important for CWW to know whether or not the river has been impacted so that it can continue to provide residents with safe, reliable drinking water. That's why CWW was one of the first utilities in the state to undertake a comprehensive source water study. Through this effort, CWW now knows all the sources of wastes in all of the streams and tributaries that feed into the river. The next step is to tie the sources into CWW's information system to help create a "real-time" notification system for all the entities that rely on the river should its quality be compromised.
