Families will be preparing an enormous feast with a Turkey, dressing, cranberries, casseroles, cornbread, pies and more… Thanksgiving is really an ideal holiday. You get to spend time with your family and friends, watch football, eat lots of turkey and stuffing, and take a nap.  That said, Thanksgiving is about a lot more than just indulging. It’s also about taking the time to reflect on our blessings and give thanks for them.

Indeed, we have much to be thankful. Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, this land we live, family, friends, the warmth of a home, good health, joy in our heart, and the opportunity to help one another.
Thanksgiving is two words, so be in the moment, be thankful, and be giving.  May you and your family have a blessed day, this Thanksgiving.  Columbus Water Works is thankful for all of our customers, that we are honored to serve 24/7, 365 days a year.

“Not what we say about our blessings, but how we use them, is the true measure of our Thanksgiving.”  W.T. Purkiser

FB Gate

Columbus, Georgia is fortunate to have Fort Benning as a neighbor to our community.  Our neighbors represent the brave men and women serving our country.  The rich history of our neighboring military base allows us the opportunity to learn more about our country and the years of sacrifice these soldiers and their families have made and are still making today: protecting our freedom.

In recognition of Veterans Day, Columbus Water Works would like to share history about why Americans take this day specifically to honor these heroes.  On November 11, 1918, an Armistice agreement was signed, declaring a cease fire and prompting negotiations to end World War 1.  In 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 “Armistice Day”, commemorating our soldiers for their heroism.

In 1938, Armistice Day became an official Holiday. A day to pay tribute to ALL our Soldiers; a day to remember those who gave their lives, who have survived the battle field, who are in the midst of battle and those preparing for battle.  Later in 1954, President Eisenhower renamed this holiday Veterans Day.

So on Wednesday, November 11, please take a moment to reflect on the sacrifices so many make to protect your freedom and what that freedom affords you and your family.  Say “Thank You” to our neighbors at Fort Benning.

On behalf of Columbus Water Works, “Thank you for your service, your sacrifices and your bravery.”

Columbus Water Works maintains over 2,100 miles of water and sewer pipes throughout the county.  Maintaining underground infrastructure poses unique challenges for utilities such as locating, accessing and repairing assets.  For the past decade, CWW has used a geographic information system (GIS) to assist in tracking the spatial location of the assets such as pipes, hydrants, valves and manholes.  Think Google maps with water pipes!   Additionally, important information such as pipe diameter, material, and age is also being recorded.

Over the years, our GIS system has become vital to the management of all our underground assets such as water lines, sewer pipes, pump stations, etc.  This technology is also essential to using our Hydraulic Modeling system, which assists in determining how modifications to our water delivery system will affect water pressure.

In 2014, CWW expanded this program by deploying a cloud based mobile application.  The new application provides easier access to the GIS information for employees who are out in the field.  Mobile devices such as iPhone and iPads are being used to view the GIS information.  Users have access to current GIS information and can also report location information back to Engineering, if needed.  This implementation was a huge step for CWW and will enable the GIS to be utilized in a more efficient way.
