Columbus Day 2020 – Paying Tribute to Discovery
Columbus Day 2020Columbus Day is upon us again, and as we do each year, we take a day to recognize the contribution of the well known explorer, Christopher Columbus.

Though it’s up for debate as to whether he was truly the first to step foot in the Americas, his voyage of 1492 nevertheless led to the beginnings of the United States as we know it.

Setting sail from Spain, and with the backing of the Spanish Catholic Monarch, the Italian explorer guided the ships the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria across the Atlantic Ocean in search of new lands.

Though not where he was aiming for, on Oct 7th, he and his crew landed in what is now known as the Bahamas. His discovery led to more and more explorers venturing west.

Columbus Day attempts to pay tribute to that discovery. Originally intended as a onetime event in 1892 for Italian-Americans to celebrate their heritage, after some lobbying to Congress in 1934, it was made an official national holiday by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. It is now celebrated each year on the second Monday of October.

So, whether you use today to celebrate Christopher Columbus, Italian-American heritage, or simply as a relaxing day with family and friends, we wish you a safe and happy day off!
