STATE U Program

Students Taking Action Towards the Environment University

S.T.A.T.E. University is a program designed to develop quality, accountable learning experiences from students. S.T.A.T.E. University was conceived by a committee that has members from the Columbus Water Works, Oxbow Meadows Environmental Learning Center, Chattahoochee RiverWarden and Keep Columbus Beautiful.  The acronym, S.T.A.T.E., stands for Students Taking Action Towards the Environment.  The idea is to give schools a project or task that requires the student to look at an area of concern for the environment or the community.  After the project is completed, they would compete with other schools in a workshop atmosphere at the Oxbow Meadows Environmental Learning Center, to evaluate their ideas and research to better our environment.  The S.T.A.T.E. U concept is designed around five basic areas, Watersheds, Wetlands, Wildlife, Water Quality and Water Conservation.  Each year one of these areas is chosen by the committee and then given to the schools for research and projects.   The S.T.A.T.E. U  program is aimed at student’s grades 6 through 12.  The overall goal of the program is to give avenues for educators, businesses, industries and the students to communicate and to learn from each other and to increase the public awareness on the environmental issues that affect us all.

The program this year is Saturday, April 18, 2015 from 10:00 a.m. till 2:00 p.m. at Oxbow Meadows Environmental Learning Center.  The theme of this year’s competition is “Watershed”.  The objective of the program is for the teams to develop a project demonstrating the concept of a watershed approach to riverine stewardship, and to use their project in some public outreach manner.

The schools participating this year are:  Baker Middle School, Arnold Magnet Academy, Northside High School and Carver High School.
